Title: Crimson

Crimson is a site-specific installation. The work owes its name to the Crimson, the spaceship at the center of the events in my 2008 short film Black Hole, it is made using collage, from recycled materials and objects from the set design of the film.
The atmosphere I wanted to create inside the Crimson is claustrophobic, post-atomic, dark. Four 90s monitors broadcast the film Black Hole, which is a reminder of the film’s plot but also a reference to Cyberpunk literature with its dark and disturbing atmospheres, to cinematic digressions. Then there are fake tapes, which evoke the old reels of recorders and threads inserted in parts of boxes cut out irregularly, plates similar to control panels, grids reminiscent of beehives that alternate with showcases with embedded human faces, carved in polystyrene and covered with coloured jelly. Inspired by the Borg from Star Trek, creatures without individual identity, these figures are reduced to pure shapes, sculptures of the original beings. The mechanical grafts, such as the eye-camera or the tubes sticking out from all sides, bear witness to a science and technology that manifest themselves in their most primitive aspect, almost as if to confirm the brutality of an uncritical process that becomes irreversible.
In this work we find a practice that I have often used, which is to transform waste materials into objects for my sets. It is part of my poetics, of my reflection on what the world produces and on the possibility of creatively restoring a function to objects destined to be eliminated. Objects that in this case allow me to connote a precarious future, full of fear, in short the opposite of a certain image of technological serenity and the belief in progress.
